Recently, RPO’s Chief Scientist Dr. David Musgraves co-authored and edited “The Springer Handbook of Glass,” a comprehensive treatment of the current state of glass science from leading experts in the field. The book serves as the preeminent glass materials resource for optical scientists, engineers and students, covering fundamental overviews as well as advanced new research on topics such as glass composition, modeling, processing methods, applications and more. Expert-level understanding of optical glass materials is a key reason why customers continue to trust RPO to exceed their design needs.
"When we were first planning this book, I always said that I wanted it to be the textbook that I never had in school: a one-stop shop for an introduction to the entire field of glass materials,” remarked Musgraves. “It was a long time in the making and represents thousands of work hours donated by people from all over the world in the spirit of science. I think we managed to create that singular textbook I’d hoped for and it feels amazing to have it published by Springer,” he went on to say.
Musgraves obtained his BA degree in Physics from Pomona College, followed by his PhD in Materials Science from the University of Arizona. Prior to joining RPO, Musgraves served as the President and CEO of IRradiance Glass, Inc., where he oversaw production and manufacturing operations, as well as the company’s R&D group.
“My favorite part of working at RPO is that I get to be active in the field of glass science and get to work on the very real-world challenges of designing, testing and fielding some of these new glass compositions that help solve our customers’ most pressing design challenges,” said Musgraves, who is widely regarded as a premier authority on the topic of IR-transmissive glass.
