Optir™ Molded Infrared
Optics
Rochester Precision Optics introduces
Optir™ moldable long wave
infrared glass and infrared aspheric optics. Optir™
utilizes the benefits of moldable infrared
chalcogenide glasses and the
expertise of Rochester Precision Optics molding
technology. Due to the rapid
growth of the infrared industry, and because of the near
universal use of germanium in IR optical systems, the
utilization of germanium has greatly increased. The
resulting demand has caused the price of germanium to
escalate rapidly and considerable concern exists
regarding its future availability and cost. Molding
allows volume manufacturing without the high cost of
capital and skilled labor involved in diamond turning
Germanium aspheres. Optir™
offers excellent part to part uniformity, lower
manufacturing and material costs. The glass
offers a low thermal change in refractive index (72 X 1O
-6/ºC) which is a benefit to
systems designers in avoiding thermal defocusing.
RPO Announces New Collimator Lenses
RPO has been
adding many new aspheric collimator lenses to
the
list of glass molded catalog optics, with focal
lengths ranging
from 2 to 11mm, and NA’s up to
0.60. All provide diffraction limited performance,
with two designs customized specifically for short
wavelength applications (408nm). Injection mounted
assemblies are also offered for select lenses. RPO’s latest catalog lens, the
A-435, is a high NA
lens designed for such applications as bar code
scanners, medical instruments, small weapons sights,
and laser pointers.
Custom diameter
and AR coating requests are always welcome, and if
necessary, RPO will work with you to develop a
custom lens to meet the requirements of your
specific application. Catalog lens Zemax files for
optical designers are available upon request.

Zemax®
Glass Catalog Files Now Available for Download!!
A Zemax® glass
catalog file for glasses on RPO’s moldable glass list is
now available online. To use this file, download it
from this site and save it on your computer in the
“ZEMAX Glass Path” directory. Unless the default was
changed when Zemax®
was installed, this will be “c:\Program Files\ZEMAX\GLASSCAT”.
As new glasses are molded and the index drop is
measured, they will be added to this file.
